Pomp Product Personalizer for WooCommerce

Pomp Personalizer Manual

Customers personalise a product themselves: they type a name and see it on the shirt or mug straight away. Every order then arrives with a print file sized exactly as you set it. You set each product up once, and every design in your catalogue works on it. This manual covers everything the plugin does and how to set it up.

What it does

A customer picks a design, types a name and sees it on the product at once. When they order, the order comes with a vector print file at the exact size you set. Everything runs on your own server, with no outside service, subscription or per-order fee.

Set up a product once, and sell every design on it. In the configurator, customers choose the design first and the product second. So a shirt or a mug is set up only once: where the print sits, its colours and its variations. From then on every design in the catalogue works on it, including the ones you add later.

A new slogan is just its text: type it, save it, and it is ready on every product you sell through the configurator. Use Allowed products on a design only when you want to keep it to some of them.

Two ways to sell

A configurator with a design catalogue

The customer goes through steps: pick a design from the catalogue, fill in the text, pick a product and colour, review, add to cart. Best for shops that sell many slogans on many products: each product is set up once, and every design works on it.

Personalised on the product page PRO

An ordinary product keeps its own page, gallery and variations. Above the add-to-cart button it gains a field for a name or for lines of text, with a live preview on the product photo.

Free and Pro

Free FREE

  • Design catalogue with categories and search
  • Configurator with a live preview on the real product
  • A vector SVG print file with every order
  • Per-product print position, size, rotation, arc and warp
  • Print colour per variation colour
  • CSV import for large catalogues
  • A page and a social sharing image for every design
  • Production email, and the personalised picture in order emails
  • Shortcodes and page templates
  • Anton and Amatic SC fonts included

Pro PRO

  • Own text: the customer writes their own lines and picks the font, spacing and margins
  • Own artwork: the customer uploads an SVG or image, which is checked and waits for your approval
  • Personalised on the product page: a name or lines of text on an ordinary product
  • Generate product image: makes the featured image and the sharing image
  • A choice of which artwork file types are allowed

The free plugin works on its own. Pro is an add-on installed alongside it.

Installation

It takes five steps. The pages need no shortcode; choosing them in Settings is enough.

Requirements

What Minimum Note
WordPress 6.4 tested up to 7.1
PHP 8.1
WooCommerce 8.0 must be active before Pomp
Imagick recommended Needed for the picture in order emails, design sharing images and Pro’s Generate product image. Everything else works without it.

Free plugin

  1. Install and activate WooCommerceSkip this if it’s already running.
  2. Install PompIn Plugins โ†’ Add New, either search for “Pomp Product Personalizer” or upload the zip with Upload Plugin. Activate it. The Anton and Amatic SC fonts are set up automatically.
  3. Create two empty pagesMake one for the configurator (e.g. “Make your own”) and one for the design catalogue (e.g. “Designs”).
  4. Pick them in SettingsGo to Pomp โ†’ Settings and choose them under Configurator page and Catalogue page. The pages start working straight away.
  5. Enable your first productOn a product, find the Personalisation configurator box and choose Sold through the configurator. Place the print area, then save. Product settings has the details.

Pro add-on

  1. Buy and download ProPro is sold at personalizer.pomp.site/pro. You get the zip and a licence key.
  2. Free plugin firstPro doesn’t run without it and shows a notice if it’s missing.
  3. Upload ProIn Plugins โ†’ Add New โ†’ Upload Plugin, upload pomp-personalizer-pro.zip and activate it.
  4. DonePomp โ†’ Settings now offers more ways to create and the Customer artwork file types panel. Products gain a third personalisation mode.

Updating

Update from the Plugins screen, or upload a newer zip and choose Replace current with uploaded. When updating both, always update the free plugin first, then Pro, because Pro relies on the newer base.

Deactivating and deleting

Deactivating removes nothing. Designs, settings and files stay, and everything comes back when you reactivate.

Deleting the free plugin removes all of its data, including print files of orders already sold. That covers every setting, product settings, design pages and their sharing images, the four database tables, and the whole wp-content/uploads/pomp-personalizer folder.

If you still need the print files of past orders, back up that folder before deleting. Deleting Pro removes only its file-type setting and any artwork not attached to an order.

First design in 10 minutes

The shortest path from installation to a slogan a customer can order. Step 1 is done once per product; every design after this one needs only steps 2 to 5.

  1. ProductOn a T-shirt or mug, choose Sold through the configurator. In the preview, drag the print box to where the print goes, then save.
  2. DesignGo to Pomp โ†’ Add design and enter a title, e.g. “Best Dad”.
  3. TextIn Text & preview, set Number of lines to 2. Type BEST DAD in the first line and [Enter name] in the second. Square brackets mark a box the customer fills in.
  4. PublishTick Active and visible in the configurator and save. The preview shows the design on the product.
  5. CheckOpen the configurator page, pick the design, enter a name and add it to the cart.

Settings

Pomp โ†’ Settings holds shop-wide values. Individual products can override them in their own box.

Pages and production email

Field What it does
Configurator page The page that shows the configurator. The shortcode is added for you, and a page that already has it is left alone.
Catalogue page The design catalogue page. Individual designs get addresses under it, e.g. /designs/best-dad/.
Production email An address, plus Notify production when an order goes into processing. When an order reaches processing, that address gets one email with the picture, the name and a link to the print file.
Empty preview ratio The preview’s shape before a product is picked.

Ways to create

Sets what customers may do in the configurator: use a ready design from the catalogue, and with Pro also write their own text or upload their own artwork. It applies to all products, and each product can override it either way.

Design layout

Field What it does
Applies to All products alike uses one layout everywhere and hides the fields on products. Each product separately gives every product its own ratio and layout.
Print and display ratio The shape of the print and the preview. The print is a vector SVG, so there is no absolute size to set; only the ratio matters. Position and the text box are set within this space.

Appearance

How the configurator, the design catalogue and each design’s page look, with a live preview beside the fields.

Field What it does
Style Theme style (the default) takes the page, fonts and buttons from your theme. Pomp style is the plugin’s own look: brush-stroke buttons, bracket marks, display type and its own page background.
Colours shown as Swatches (the default) draws each colour as a circle in that colour, or as its picture. Names shows the same buttons sizes get. It applies to attributes whose values carry a colour or picture: WooCommerce’s Colour/Image attributes, or colours set in a theme such as WoodMart. Sizes are always shown as names.
Colours The accent, text, background and button colours. Only the ones you change are written out, so a theme that sets its own keeps them.
Fonts The display, body and label fonts: the style’s default, your theme’s font, or a font you uploaded.

Default print layout

Sets the position and text box used before a product is picked, and on any product without its own values. Set it for your most common product and adjust only the exceptions.

Default social image

The product each design is drawn on for sharing on Facebook and LinkedIn, used when a design has no choice of its own in its Design image box. Needs Imagick.

Upload limit and diagnostics

Artwork upload limit PRO caps artwork uploads per connection (5 an hour by default) to prevent abuse. Mobile networks and offices share one address, so if a customer reports they can’t upload, click Reset upload counters.

Diagnostics shows the PHP version, whether Imagick and GD are available, memory_limit, max_execution_time, the data folder, how many fonts, designs and enabled products there are, and the next scheduled cleanup. Look here first when something doesn’t work.

Fonts

The same page is where you upload and delete fonts (see Fonts).

Customer artwork file types PRO

The formats customers may upload: SVG, PNG, JPG/JPEG and WebP. All are allowed until you turn some off.

Designs

A design is a catalogue slogan: fixed text, boxes the customer fills in, and optional artwork. Edit them under Pomp โ†’ Designs.

Text & preview

A live preview sits on the left, drawn on the product chosen in Preview on. It updates as you type, with no need to save.

Field What it does
Font The font for the whole design.
Text colour The text colour. A product’s print colour can override it.
Colour per line Gives each line its own colour.
Uppercase Turns the text into capitals.
Number of lines Up to 6, or up to 3 with a template. A template design may also have 0 lines: artwork with no text.

Each line

Field What it does
Left and right margin Narrows the line on both sides, 0โ€“50 % of the box width.
Line height 100โ€“150 %: the share of height this line gets compared with the others.
Size The exact letter height as a percentage of the print area. 0 means automatic, from the line height.
Vertical position Moves the line up or down, as a percentage of the print area. Negative moves it up; 0 leaves it where it falls.
Font A font for this line, or Same as the other lines.
Colour Shown when Colour per line is on.
Line text The line’s text, with boxes in square brackets, as described below.

Boxes in square brackets

Line text The customer sees
Best dad Nothing to fill in; the line is fixed.
[Enter name] One box, labelled “Enter name”.
from [Enter who] and [Enter whom] “from”, a box, “and”, another box.
  • A line with boxes that the customer leaves empty is skipped completely, so “Best [name]” with no name doesn’t print a bare “Best”.
  • A box accepts letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and full stops. The product sets the maximum number of characters.

Design settings

  • Template: fixed artwork behind the text (a logo or badge), as SVG or an image. Leave it empty for a text-only design.
  • Status: Active and visible in the configurator. Customers never see an inactive design.

Other boxes

  • Categories: the design’s categories. You can type a new one and assign it straight away.
  • Allowed products: which products the design may be used on. With none selected, it works on every enabled product.
  • Design image: Drawn on picks the product the design’s picture is drawn on, Use the site default, or None. Generate design image draws it straight away, and it is redrawn on every save too. It becomes the design page’s featured image: the picture Facebook, WhatsApp and SEO plugins show when the page is shared. Needs Imagick.

Canvas, text box, alignment, rotation and the character limit aren’t set on the design. They belong to each product, because the same slogan sits differently on a mug than on a shirt.

CSV import

Pomp โ†’ CSV import brings in hundreds of designs at once. Save the file as UTF-8. Only title is required.

Column Contents
external_id Your own ID. Re-importing with the same ID updates the existing design.
title The design’s title. Required.
category The design’s category.
slug The design’s address. Left empty, it’s made from the title. An existing slug also updates that design.
template_file Artwork path inside uploads/pomp-personalizer/, e.g. designs/grafike/000001.png.
preview_file The catalogue thumbnail.
text_config Text settings as JSON (font, colour, number of linesโ€ฆ).
allowed_product_ids Product IDs, e.g. [13,36].
search_extra Extra search words, e.g. dad father.
status 1 for active, 0 for inactive.
sort_order Position in the catalogue.

A sample file ships with the plugin at examples/designs-example.csv. Errors are reported per row, so one bad row doesn’t stop the rest.

Product settings

Every product has a Personalisation configurator box. That’s where you choose how it’s personalised and where the print sits. The box shows only the settings the chosen mode uses.

Three modes

Not personalised

An ordinary product; nothing is added.

Sold through the configurator

The product is offered in the configurator. Visitors to its own page are sent to the catalogue. It can’t be added to the cart directly, and it’s hidden from shop listings and search, because the design is what gets indexed.

Personalised on the product page PRO

An ordinary product with a name or lines field above the add-to-cart button. See On the product page.

The background picture

  • Both modes draw on the product’s own WooCommerce pictures: the product image, and each variation’s image for its colour. There is nothing extra to upload. A variable product with no image of its own uses its default variation’s picture.
  • Product page PRO: you can also upload a Template, SVG or PNG artwork printed along with the name, in the print colour.

Print layout

Drag the box in the product preview; the sliders set the same values more precisely.

Setting What it does
X/Y position, width and height Where the text box sits inside the print area.
Rotation Turns the whole print around the centre of the box.
Arc Bends the print into an arc.
Warp mesh Drag the mesh points in the preview and the print bends over the surface, like warp in Photoshop. While a mesh exists, the arc isn’t used. Reset grid removes the mesh.
Print starting position Where the content settles inside the box: 0 at the top, 50 in the middle, 100 at the bottom. It only uses free space, so tall content has nowhere to move.
Print size Print width and height in pixels, and DPI. For Pro artwork uploads this is also the minimum resolution an image must have.

Print colour

Print colour is the colour the design prints in on this product, and it overrides the colour set on the design. In the Mockup by value table, which shows each colour’s WooCommerce picture, you set the print colour for each variation colour: white on dark shirts, black on light ones. As set on the design keeps the design’s own colour.

Configurator only

  • Ways to create overrides the shop setting for this product.
  • Fonts for custom text PRO sets which fonts customers may pick for their own text.
  • Quick-pick priority: the product’s order in the configurator’s quick-pick row (higher comes first).

The configurator

This is what a customer sees on the configurator page: steps with a progress bar and a live preview, with no page reloads.

  1. Design: pick from the catalogue, or with Pro write your own text or upload artwork. This step is skipped when the customer arrives from a design’s page.
  2. Text: fill in the boxes, with a counter for the characters left.
  3. Product: a quick-pick row of products. The design moves onto the chosen one straight away.
  4. Variation: colour and size, with the product page’s own details beside them: size guide, short description, stock, meta and share buttons. The colour changes both the photo and the print colour. Simple products skip this step and show those details on the review step.
  5. Review: the final look, and add to cart.

The design comes before the product on purpose. The customer chooses a slogan first and then what to put it on, so a design is never tied to one product and you never set one up per product.

After adding to the cart, the configurator follows your shop setting. If WooCommerce redirects to the cart, it redirects. Otherwise it shows a done screen with the product picture, a cart button and a button to start a new design, and your theme opens its side cart or popup if it has one.

Extras that your theme or other plugins add to a normal product page, such as a size guide, appear here with no setup.

PRO

Personalised on the product page

For blank products where the customer only adds a name or a short text. The product keeps its own page, gallery, variations and add-to-cart button.

Setting it up

  1. ModeOn the product, choose Personalised on the product page.
  2. ArtworkUpload a Template: SVG or PNG printed along with the text, in the chosen variation’s print colour. It’s optional.
  3. Area and coloursSet the print layout and the print colour per variation colour, just as for the configurator.
  4. What the customer fills inChoose Name or Lines, as described below.
  5. Default variationIn WooCommerce’s variations, set a default for every attribute (colour and size). A notice at the top of the screen warns you if any are missing.
  6. Product imageClick Generate product image. You don’t need to save first.

Name

The customer types the name once, and it prints in one or two places. Each place has:

  • Sample text: an example name for the preview and the generated product image. Left empty, a grey placeholder name is used.
  • Font, Size and Vertical position, which work like the matching settings on a design line.

What the row is called is the label customers see on the field. Left empty, it reads “Name”.

Lines

Lines work as they do on a design: up to six, with the same settings (margins, line height, size, position, font, colour). Each line has a Line type:

  • Text with boxes: fixed text with boxes in brackets, e.g. HAPPILY MARRIED TO [name].
  • Customer writes the whole line: the customer writes the entire line, and the text you enter is only the field’s label. This kind of line also accepts common punctuation: . , ! ? - ' & : ; ( ) ". Emoji are rejected because fonts don’t contain them.

If every line is fixed, the product sells exactly as set up.

What the customer sees

  • The artwork and fixed text appear on the photo straight away, before anything is typed.
  • The text is drawn over the product photo and follows the colour choice: a new colour brings a new photo and print colour.
  • Add to cart works with themes that add by AJAX, such as Woodmart, and follows your shop setting: redirect to the cart, or open the side cart.
  • A product with no text filled in can’t be added to the cart, not even by a side route.

Generate product image

Draws the first variation’s photo with the artwork and sample text, and sets it as the product’s featured image. That image shows in shop listings and in link previews when the page is shared. It uses what’s in the form right now, saved or not. Each click makes a new file, so the old image doesn’t linger in browsers, Facebook or caches. Needs Imagick.

Duplicating a product. The copy is a draft, and its preview works. The copy doesn’t take the original’s generated image; click the button on the copy to give it its own.

PRO

Own text and own artwork in the configurator

Own text

The customer writes their own lines, and chooses how many, the font (from those the product allows), and each line’s spacing and margins. An empty line stays empty, as a gap. Colour, text box and warp still come from the product, so the print stays predictable.

Own artwork

The customer uploads an SVG or image. Nothing is accepted as it arrives:

  • SVG (up to 2 MB) is never stored or served as uploaded. Only its geometry is read, and a new SVG is written from it, so scripts, entities, external links and foreignObject have no way through. SVGs with <text> are rejected with a clear message asking for the text to be converted to outlines.
  • Images (up to 8 MB; PNG, JPG, WebP) are re-encoded, which strips metadata and anything appended to the file.
  • Resolution: an image needs at least as many pixels as the product’s print size, because rejecting it beats printing it blurry. SVG is vector, so this doesn’t apply to it.
  • Approval: every upload waits for your approval before a print file is issued. Rejected artwork never gets a print file.

In the preview, an SVG bends over the product like lettering does. An image can’t be bent faithfully, so it’s placed flat, with a grid showing roughly where it lands.

Catalogue and pages

Three ways to set up pages

  1. Simplest: choose the pages in Pomp โ†’ Settings, and the shortcode is added for you.
  2. Page template: on a classic theme, choose Pomp: configurator or Pomp: design catalogue in Page Attributes โ†’ Template. Block themes don’t offer plugin templates, so use the first way there.
  3. Your own layout: place the shortcode in a page you’ve built yourself.

Configurator shortcode

Attribute Default What it does
product_id 0 Opens with this product already chosen.
design 0 Opens with this design already chosen.
start none design, text or artwork: the way of creating the page opens on. A way that’s turned off is ignored.

For example,

makes a page just for uploading artwork.

Catalogue shortcode

01. Designs0 designs

No designs match that search.

Attribute Default What it does
chrome yes no hides everything around the design grid at once.
search as chrome Search box.
categories as chrome Category filter.
products as chrome Product filter.
count as chrome Result count.
pagination as chrome Pagination.
per_page 0 Designs per page; 0 uses the shop setting.

No designs match that search.

shows eight designs and nothing else.

Customising the look

Copy a template from the plugin (templates/pomp-configurator.php, templates/pomp-catalog.php) into yourtheme/pomp-personalizer/ and edit it there. The theme’s copy always wins and survives plugin updates. A page using the template has the class pomp-template--configurator for CSS. Colours and fonts are set in Pomp โ†’ Settings โ†’ Appearance; beyond that, they are CSS variables such as --pomp-accent, --pomp-ink and --pomp-display.

Search engines

Every design and every category has its own page, so search engines can find them. A category’s description is the only text that tells search engines what makes it different, so two or three sentences are enough. Products sold through the configurator are kept out of the index, because the designs are indexed instead.

Cart and orders

  • Cart and checkout show a picture of the personalised product instead of the product photo, along with the name and design. This works with the block cart too.
  • The order in admin shows the preview beside the item, the configuration ID, and Download print file. If a print file is missing, Generate again recreates it.
  • Customer artwork PRO is approved or rejected on the order, and the print file is issued only after approval.
  • The print file is an SVG in the product’s ratio. It’s vector, so it scales to any print size. The link carries a security token, works without logging in, and the file names can’t be guessed.

Order emails

Customers see their personalised product in the email. Admins and production get everything needed for printing, whichever plugin designs your emails.

Email What it contains
Customer The personalised product picture in place of the product photo, and the name. The design is listed only when there is one.
Admin The same, plus a Personalisation for production block with the picture, the name and Download print SVG.
Production A separate email when the order reaches processing, sent once per order. Turn it on in Settings.
  • The picture travels inside the email as an embedded image, not a link. It shows in Gmail, behind Cloudflare, and in mailboxes that block outside images.
  • The picture is drawn when the order is placed, using the same font, size and position as the print. Needs Imagick.
  • Email template plugins work with no setup, because the finished email is corrected just before it’s sent. Tested with VillaTheme Email Template Customizer Premium.
  • Plain-text emails have no picture; the admin email gets a text block with the link instead.

Fonts

  • Included: Anton and Amatic SC (Regular and Bold) are installed on first activation, so a design can be drawn right away. They are Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License, and the licence ships with them. A deleted font stays deleted; updates won’t bring it back.
  • Your own fonts must be TrueType (.ttf). Text is converted to outlines letter by letter, so the letter shapes have to be readable: WOFF, WOFF2 and OpenType fonts with CFF outlines are rejected. Google Fonts offers a .ttf for every family.
  • If a design asks for a font that’s no longer there, a fallback font is used and the admin shows a notice naming the missing font and its replacement.

Files and cleanup

Folder Contents
uploads/pomp-personalizer/generated/ Previews and email pictures.
โ€ฆ/generated/print/ Print files, protected from direct access.
โ€ฆ/fonts/, designs/, mockups/ Fonts, design artwork, mockups.
โ€ฆ/artwork/ PRO Customer artwork.
  • A preview and a print file together take about 27 kB per configuration.
  • Cleanup runs every hour. A configuration that was never ordered expires after 7 days and is deleted with its files. Temporary files go after a day, and so do previews of deleted designs.
  • Anything attached to an order is kept, however old.
  • Rendering is vector and typically takes about 17 ms, with no background queue, so shared hosting is enough.

Nginx: the print folder is protected with an .htaccess file, which Apache and LiteSpeed obey and nginx ignores. On nginx, deny generated/print in the server configuration. The file names also contain a secret part, so they can’t be guessed anyway.

Themes and plugins

With How it works
Block themes Choose the pages in Settings. Block theme editors don’t offer plugin page templates.
Classic themes Page templates, plus template overrides from the theme.
Woodmart and AJAX add-to-cart themes Add to cart, the side cart and the variation gallery all work.
Colour swatches The configurator draws its own, from the colours set in WooCommerce or in a theme such as WoodMart. A theme’s own swatches show in it only when a developer turns them on (see For developers).
Page cache plugins The configurator and design pages tell cache plugins not to store them, so customers never get an expired session token. Tested with WP Super Cache and WP Rocket. The plain catalogue still caches normally.
Size guides and similar add-ons Appear in the configurator with no setup.
Email template plugins Supported; see Order emails.
Cloudflare and firewalls The email picture is embedded, so it never has to be fetched.

Troubleshooting

The preview doesn’t appear

Check that the product is in the right mode and the design is active. Then look at Pomp โ†’ Logs and the Diagnostics panel in Settings.

A notice says a font was replaced

The font the design asks for was deleted or never uploaded. Upload it again as .ttf, or pick a different font on the design.

No email picture, sharing image or product image

The server has no Imagick. Check Tools โ†’ Site Health โ†’ Info โ†’ Media Handling. On cPanel hosting, enable it under Select PHP Version โ†’ Extensions โ†’ imagick, for the PHP version the site actually runs.

Two names show on the product page

The product has no default for every variation attribute, so the page opens on the generated image, which already contains the sample name. Set the defaults in Variations.

“Choose: Size” when adding to cart

The customer hasn’t chosen every attribute, which happens with variations set to “any size”.

Colours show as names instead of circles

Check Pomp โ†’ Settings โ†’ Appearance โ†’ Colours shown as. A circle also needs its colour set on the attribute’s value, in WooCommerce or in your theme.

A customer can’t upload artwork PRO

Their connection has reached the upload limit. Click Reset upload counters in Settings.

The new product image doesn’t stick

After Generate product image, the Product image box refreshes on its own. If the edit screen was open from before an update, reload it before saving, or saving will restore the old image.
